Thanjavur Dolls- A Heritage in Itself

Thanjavur dolls or Thanjavur thalayatti bommai (தஞ்சாவூர் தலையாட்டி பொம்மை) in Tamil meaning “head shaking doll,” a unique and famous product of historical and cultural city of Thanjavur was originated during the reign of Maratha king Saraboji in the nineteen century. His aesthetics of colors and art gave a shape to this beautiful structure.  Since then, the skillful artisans of the region kept this unique art alive. This doll is given a Geographical Indicator status by Government of India.  Apart from dolls Thanjavur is also famous for its paintings, classical dance, Tamil literature, silk weaving and crafts.
